2017 V8 Supercars August Update – a few quick thoughts on the key teams in the Virgin Supercars currently

Dick Johnson is back where he belongs.

Its great to see the V8 Supercar veteran Dick Johnson is up at the pointy end of the field. Since Roger Penske has come on board to help the team, they have gone from strength to strength in terms of being extremely competive and winning races. It shows that when you have money you can buy the best people and the best drivers, and buying Ludo Lacroix from Red Bull Racing team and Scott McLaughlin (whos leading the championship by fifteen points over Jamie Whincup) certainly helped as Ludo has vast amounts of knowledge and also has taken knowledge from Red Bull and Scott has proved that he is a good driver

Red Bull has still been competitive.

Red Bull Holden Racing Team has continued to be up the front part of the field this year but this year has been different. Defending champion Shane Van Gisbergen has admitted that he has struggled with the car at points and he is 258 points away from Scott McLaughlin. Shanes got the qualifying pace but is struggling in the race. Meanwhile former champion Jamie Whincup has a good chance to win his sixth title after breaking the supercars most won races in history with 105 race wins at Sydney Motorsport park.

What a failure at Walkinsaw Racing Team

The team that was formerly known as Holden Racing Team renamed themselves to Walkinsaw Racing team owned by Walkinsaw, they also replaced Garth Tander with Scott Pye. Everyone had hopes for them and they have gone backwards in a hurry. Gone are the days of that team being competitive and at the front, now they are parked in the middle of the pack or worse. One would wonder if they could even be around for next year.

GRM has struggled.

Last year Garry Rogers Motorsport was up at the front of the field with Scott McLaughlin, competiting and winning races and poles. Oh how times have changed, they had a major split with Volvo and Mclaughlin moved to Ford. So they swapped back to Holden and also signed former GRM driver Garth Tander back to the team. It will take probably this whole year for them to get there heads back around the Holden, but expect to see them randomly appearing in and around the top ten like they have this year.
